Empire’s Gonna Empire
So much for a hopeful start to 2026
I could write plenty about the US attack on Venezuela and its historical background, but I’m too consumed with disgust at the moment. Empire’s gonna empire, but this is taking the violation of international law to new lows. So I will leave some commentary below from others.
“I felt literally sick to my stomach when I read of the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife by US forces,” writes Charles Eisenstein. “It is the latest in a series of crimes by the increasingly deranged Trump administration against that country: first murder (the extrajudicial killing of passengers and crew on boats in the Caribbean), then piracy (the seizure of an tanker carrying Venezuelan oil), and now kidnapping.”
Vanessa Beeley sums up what this touchstone/tombstone moment may portend:

Perhaps most unnerving is how Americans seems paralyzed, in thrall of their leader: a psychopath flailing about at the top of a political dung heap. It has been a long time coming. And here we are. An exponential crime spree.
I totally agree with you Geoff.
How can Trump do these things without approval from Congress? I hope his days are numbered bur that is wishful thinking!
