Beautiful Geoff. Thanks so much for such a moving article articulating the many blind spots we have about Remembrance Day. In Flanders Fields is one of the most beautiful poems ever written. When I read it, I cry for our collective wounds, sorrows and stupidity that lead us to war in the first place. And just the seeming futility of overcoming aggressive impulses that are manipulated by self serving powers that be.

Thank you very much Geoff for your work and power of observation. You are a great teacher, inspiring us to think about the topics you discuss. We should also remember Russian civilian and defending soldiers lives lost during the second world war, all victims of Nazi aggression.

Do you know ee cummings' anti war poem "Ain't freedom Grand"? I made a screen print about 50 years ago using cummings' title for it. It shows an English newly married couple standing in front of a first W.W. memorial in Vienna that was bombed in the second W.W. But it's now made of kids building blocks in primary colours... Thanks for this. Robert

As a 'child of war' born on the wrong side (Germany), I truly appreciate this piece. Makes me feel somewhat less resentful of the entire circus..

Thanks a lot for these truths, Jeff. Very much appreciated. Winston Churchill said, "The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter." i say the best argument against the neo-liberal lies, the right wing power structure, and the military-industrial establishment, that have ruled and ruined the world since WWII is a bit of reading about the racist, sexist, classist, imperialist war-mongerer, Winston Churchill, and the dominant part played by the British Empire in most of the wars these last 200 years, including WW I and WW II.
