Heart warming and true. The future holds the potential for climate catastrophes, where people will rally around each other and do their best to survive. I sense that this will eventually upset the apple cart of cancer-stage capitalism and we will return to something more humane and decentralized.

By this time next year or the year after, the world is going to be a completely different place. It will be tough and ongoing but will require intense cooperation, good will and love just to survive.

Right on! Right on! Write on! I find it terribly sad that the notion of Christmas as the time when was born The Prince of Peace has been largely removed from the celebrations, festivities, ceremonies, and traditions. Peace isn't profitable. Christmas is the best time for business and war is the biggest business in the world. Ergo Christmas is the best time for war - war against insufficient material goodies. That's a war retailers will always win and folks will always lose. Could be worse - could say Santa is a warmonger. (lol). But capitalism has sucked the morality and ethics out of everything because morality and ethics, with the exception of the god-like work ethic, are bad for business. Modern religions have sucked the Judao-Christian ethics out of our lives. Blah blah blah... Humanity has taken a number of wrong turns on the Information Superhighway and gotten lost in a bad part of the universe. Somebody call humanity a taxi. l(lol0.

I don't have much of a comment Geoff because there's nothing that could be added to your article you've covered all bases. Well researched I may add much appreciated. You've written the complete , poignant , ( gets to the point quickly , not wordy - again much appreciated by your readers ) but detailed , article.

Without so many words you made a point that it's the corporates , the government , the power brokers , the strong man psychopaths haha , that are pulling the puppet strings of war and their purposeful misery on the human race , on a grand scale ( and on not to mention the rest of the planet )

Your article reminds me of Mr Psycho President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko , the nutcase Putin , how can we forget the leader of China - Xi Jinping , who's that idiot in Brazil whatever his name is ( trying purposely to forget ) and Bashar al-Assad. Last but not least let's recollect the leader of North Korea ( trying to forget his name also haha )

Certainly president Trump deserves honorable mention not for the least of which he tried his best to start a nuclear war - twice.

These are the guys that are instruments of war and other human sufferings. Like you say it was the generals and the government that ordered the soldiers to resume killing each other on Christmas Day 1914.

Brilliant article you wrote Geoff.

I've often re-read and appreciated the tale of the Christmas Truce and lamented that a more general peace didn't break out. Of course, this speaks directly to your musings on current narratives, threads that haven't changed much over the centuries despite the best efforts of legions of well-intentioned efforts by the likes of Solnit and her analogues. I just needed a mention of Pyotr Kropotkin to complete the tableau. Thank you for the musings, for the encouragement to refocus and keep after it.

A hopeful ending to a downtrodden year. Thanks for reminding us that we can do better than this...

Very true! People can rally around when there is tragedy as it can help them forget their trivial worries!
